AI receptionist vs human receptionist: the real cost in Singapore

Two head profiles formed from glowing dot particles facing each other on a dark gradient, one organic and one geometric, representing a human receptionist and an AI receptionist

A full-time receptionist in Singapore costs about S$3,333 a month once 17 percent employer CPF is added to the official median wage of S$2,849, and covers 26 percent of the hours in a week. Published AI receptionist plans start at about US$20 a month and answer around the clock. 6 Seven Labs builds AI voice calling agents for Singapore businesses, proven on thousands of real production calls; this guide prices the human, the AI and the hybrid honestly.

What does a receptionist really cost in Singapore?

S$2,849 gross a month is the most defensible figure: the median wage for a general receptionist in the Ministry of Manpower's Occupational Wage Survey, June 2025. Add the 17 percent employer CPF contribution and one hire costs about S$3,333 a month, roughly S$40,000 a year. That computation is ours; the inputs are official.

The ladder around that median is a useful sanity check. The same tables list office clerks at S$2,286, telephone operators at S$2,614, medical and dental receptionists at S$2,931, hotel receptionists at S$3,100, customer service officers at S$3,300 and contact centre information clerks at S$3,304, all median gross. One caveat: the survey covers private establishments with at least 25 employees, so small-firm wages may sit lower.

Employers pay CPF on top of the salary, not out of it. For employees aged 55 and below, the employer share is 17 percent under the CPF Board's rates from 1 January 2026. On the median wage that is another S$484 a month, taking one seat to about S$3,333. Again, our arithmetic on official inputs.

The 13th month adds more. AWS is not compulsory; MOM states payment depends on what is in the employment contract or collective agreement. Where it is paid, our arithmetic runs 13 payments of S$2,849 plus 17 percent CPF, spread over 12 months: about S$3,611 a month.

Filling the seat is a cost of its own. SHRM's benchmarking put the average cost per hire at nearly US$4,700 (April 2022, US data). Singapore fees will differ, but no market hires for free. The method here mirrors our telemarketer cost comparison: official wage, official CPF, every calculation shown.

How much of the week does one receptionist cover?

44 hours out of 168, which is 26 percent. MOM caps standard contractual hours at up to 44 a week, and a week holds 168; the division is ours. Covering all 168 hours at 44 a head would take about 3.8 receptionists, before anyone takes a day off.

And days off are guaranteed. Statutory annual leave runs from 7 to 14 days, paid outpatient sick leave up to 14 days with up to 60 for hospitalisation, plus 11 paid public holidays. Stack the entitlements and one receptionist can be away up to about 39 working days a year, our addition.

Continuity carries its own risk. MOM's labour turnover series shows an average monthly resignation rate of 1.2 percent across the economy in 2025, roughly 14 percent a year by our multiplication. No receptionist-specific series exists, so treat it as a background rate, not a prediction.

The uncovered 74 percent is where revenue quietly leaks: calls that ring out at lunch, after six, on Sundays. We put honest numbers on that failure mode in our guide to the real cost of missed calls.

What does an AI receptionist cost?

Between about US$20 and US$249 a month at the small-business end, based on published pricing pages we checked on 19 July 2026, while one enterprise provider's published page states contracts start at US$30,000 annually. We deliberately do not name or link providers; the band is market context. It is wide because included minutes, integrations and build quality vary as much as the price does.

To be concrete about the shapes inside that band: the low end lists US$20 a month with no voice minutes included and US$99 with 200 minutes, while flat-rate plans list US$79 to US$249 a month with unlimited minutes. Cheap plans meter the minutes; flat plans price them in. Estimate your monthly call minutes before comparing anything.

Human answering services make a telling contrast. One long-established US virtual receptionist service publishes plans from US$250 a month for 50 receptionist minutes to US$1,725 for 500: about US$3.45 to US$5.00 per human minute, our division. Human minutes are dear because a human can only take one call at a time.

Our own published plans are Starter at S$680 a month with 500 call minutes and Growth at S$1,980 with 2,000, each agent custom-built and run for you; the pricing section always carries current rates. If you want the plain-English basics before the numbers, start with our AI receptionist guide.

When should you still hire the human?

More often than an AI company should admit. Gartner surveyed 5,728 customers in December 2023 and found 64 percent would prefer that companies did not use AI for customer service, and 53 percent would consider switching to a competitor on discovering a firm used it.

Dig into the concern and it is not anti-robot sentiment. The top worry, held by 60 percent, was that AI would make it harder to reach a person. Gartner's guidance to service leaders was direct: deploy AI only with a guaranteed path to a human.

So hire the human where a human is the product. Walk-in guests who need a face at the desk. Distressed callers who need warmth before information. Complex complaints that need judgment and the authority to bend a rule. Relationship memory, the regular who expects to be recognised by name. No AI receptionist wins those moments, including ours.

Why is a hybrid setup usually the right answer?

Because even a good AI deployment does not finish every call, and it should not try to. Routine questions, bookings and messages resolve end to end. Complaints, judgment calls and anything unusual get transferred, and the transfer is the point: the caller reached a person without the phone ever ringing out.

That is precisely the reachability guarantee Gartner asks for: deploy AI only with a clear, fast path to a human. In a good hybrid, escalation is not a failure mode. It is the feature, and it should be designed as carefully as the greeting.

The pattern is simple to run. The AI answers every call instantly, at any hour, and clears the routine ones: opening hours, appointments, directions, order status. Your people take the escalations during office hours with the transcript in front of them. Nobody waits on hold, and nobody argues with a robot about a refund.

How do the three options compare?

Three options, one table, every figure sourced above. The human column carries the S$3,333 loaded payroll built from MOM and CPF data; the AI column runs from about US$20 a month at the entry level to our S$1,980 Growth plan; the hybrid column is the split most Singapore businesses actually end up running.

Frequently asked questions

Can receptionists be replaced by AI?

Not fully, and we say that as a company that builds AI receptionists. Gartner found 64 percent of customers would prefer that companies did not use AI for customer service, and 60 percent worry AI makes it harder to reach a person. Routine calls, yes; judgment, empathy and walk-ins, no.

Is an AI receptionist a good idea?

For coverage, yes. One full-time receptionist covers 44 of the 168 hours in a week, about 26 percent by our division on MOM working-hours rules, and can be away up to about 39 working days a year. An AI receptionist answers the rest, as long as callers keep a clear path to a human.

Is an AI receptionist better than an answering service?

They solve different problems. One US answering service publishes plans working out to about US$3.45 to US$5.00 per human minute, and each caller occupies one receptionist. AI plans are flat-rate, answer instantly and take several calls at once; a good human service still reads nuance better.

How much cheaper is an AI receptionist than a human receptionist?

A human receptionist costs about S$3,333 a month loaded, our computation on MOM wage and CPF data. Our AI plans are S$680 a month with 500 call minutes and S$1,980 with 2,000, and published market plans run from about US$20 to US$249 a month.
